....................................................................................................................................................................................

Join the Atlanta alumni chapter of Case Western Reserve University as we partake in a self-guided tour through the Center for Civil and Human Rights followed by a reception and presentation featuring alumnus Chief Judge Herbert E. Phipps (LAW’71).

We will tour the Center for Civil and Human Rights to understand how the American Civil Rights Movement and today’s Global Human Rights Movement intertwine. After our tour, we will make our way to Paschal’s, a historical southern-style restaurant that has been a meeting place for some of the most notable entertainers, politicians and business people, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Maynard Jackson, Andrew Young, Vice President Al Gore, Aretha Franklin and Dizzy Gillespie.

Chief Judge Phipps will share his experiences with Civil and Human Rights Movements. After earning his Juris Doctor degree from CWRU Phipps returned to Albany, Georgia to join the law practice of C.B. King. The firm emphasized civil rights litigation, including school desegregations, voting rights, jury discrimination, student rights, police brutality and discriminatory employment practices. From 1983 to 1995, Judge Phipps engaged in the solo practice of law. Since 2013, Phipps has presided as Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Georgia. Read more about Chief Judge Phipps’s career.

The Alumni Association’s Executive Director Emeritus Dan Clancy (LAW’62), an FBI agent assigned to the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march, will introduce Chief Judge Phipps; remarks will begin at 6:30 p.m. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be provided for guests.

We look forward to seeing you there! Please note registration closes August 12.

Saturday, August 29 3-5 p.m. Center for Civil and Human Rights 6-9 p.m. Reception at Paschal's Guests: Chief Judge Herbert Phipps (LAW'71) and Daniel Clancy (LAW'62)
